Financial Performance Research Paper

Exxon-Mobil and Shell Financial Performance Paper

Introduction
Exxon-Mobil and Shell are two companies that occupy leading positions in the oil and gas industry. In actuality, the two companies are among the largest companies operating in this market. It is important to underline that Exxon-Mobil and Shell operates worldwide and nowadays they widely represented in many countries of the world. At the same time, oil and gas industry, where the companies operate, is considered to be not very perspective because of the scarcity of natural resources, notably oil and gas but, nevertheless, in recent years both companies demonstrate positive trends and their positions in the market remain unchanged and, what is more, they tend to gradually increase their share of the market to the extent that in the future it is even possible to speak about Exxon-Mobil and Shell as two major players in the oil and gas market of the entire world.

However, it is hardly possible to objectively assess the current position of Exxon-Mobil or Shell and their perspectives without a profound analysis of their current financial performance and the trends they demonstrate. On analyzing these components, it will be possible to definitely compare and contrast the achievements of Exxon-Mobil and Shell and discuss their perspectives in relation to each other and their future in the oil and gas industry at large.

Financial analysis
Speaking about the current financial position of Exxon-Mobil and Shell, it should be said that both companies are in a stable position and they have demonstrated certain growth in recent years. At the same time, it is worthy of mention that the position of Shell seems to be a bit deteriorated in recent years and the growth is not so significant as it used to be in the past.

Nevertheless, Shell still remains among the leaders and its leading position in the market seems to be unarguable. In this respect, it should be said that the market capacity of the company is assessed as almost 245 billion dollars, while the enterprise value constitutes 251,17 billion dollars (Shell. Annual Report 2006). Obviously, these figures perfectly illustrate the strength of the current position of the company in the market. In such a situation, even certain slow down in the quarterly revenue growth, which constituted -3.3%, seems to be not very disturbing (Shell. Annual Report 2006). In fact, the company’s financial performance does not make any reasonable signs that could indicate at the approaching crisis or financial problems of the company.

Furthermore, it should be said that the company’s revenue constituted 316,36 billion dollars. As a result, the revenue per share of Shell constituted 99,44 dollars. Also, it should be said that the net income of Shell the last year constituted 25.83 billion dollars (Shell. Annual Report 2006). Obviously, this is quite a substantial figure that is higher by 7% compared to the previous year. The current ratio of the company constitutes 1.153.

At the same time, it is worth noting that the total cash of Shell is 11.18 billion dollars while its debt is 17,37 billion dollars (Shell. Annual Report 2006). Its debt/equity ratio constitutes 0.165. Speaking about the current cash flow statement of the company, it should be said that, at the present moment, the operating cash flow of Shell is about 35 billion dollars, while its levered free cash flow constitutes 15.13 billion dollars.

Also, it should be said that the shareholders of the company can feel that Shell takes care about their dividends. In this respect, it is worthy of mention that the last year the annual dividend rate was 2.88, while in the previous year it constituted 2.63 (Shell. Annual Report 2006). Finally, it should be said that the company’s management is quite effective. To put it more precisely, speaking about the management effectiveness, it is necessary to underline that the last year return on assets constituted 11.47% while the previous year it was 10.95%. Moreover, the last year return on equity constituted 25.75%, while the previous year it was 23.5%. At the same time, the profit margin remains relatively high and at the present moment profit margin constitutes 8.16% and operating margin 11.47% (Shell. Annual Report 2006).

As for Exxon-Mobil it should be said that the company basically demonstrates positive results in its financial performance. To put it more precisely, within the last two years the company’s sales and operating revenues keep growing and constituted 358.955 million dollars in 2005 while the last year this figure has reached 365.467 million dollars. Obviously, such a growth is quite a positive achievement, especially if one takes into consideration the fact that the company Exxon-Mobil was formed just in 1999 and within less than a decade it demonstrated a steady trend to growth.

Furthermore, it should be said that the net income of the company has also increased significantly. To put it more precisely, in 2005 the net income of Exxon-Mobil constituted 36,130 million dollars while the last year it has increased to 39,500 million dollars. In fact, such a growth in the net incomes is also a serious achievement of the company.

In such a situation, it seems to be quite natural that the share price of Exxon-Mobil also increased significantly and basically it is possible to correlate the growth of the company’s revenues and its net income to the growth of its share price. In this respect, it should be said that by the end of 2006, the share price of the company constituted 76.63 dollars, while in 2005 it was only 56.12 dollars. Obviously, the growth of the share price of the company is even more significant than the growth of its revenues and net income.

Furthermore, it should be said that the cash dividends of Exxon-Mobil shareholders constituted 7,638 million of dollars in 2006, that is higher than the cash dividends in 2005 which were just 7,185 million of dollars.

Also, it is worthy of mention that the cash flow from operations and asset sales in 2006 decreased compared to the previous year. To put it more precisely, in 2006, the cash flow from operations and asset sales constituted 52,366 million dollars, while, in 2005, it was 54,174 million dollars Furthermore, the net income per share in 2006 constituted 6,68 that is higher compared to 2005 when it was only 5,76 (Exxon-Mobil. Annual Report 2006).

Trends analysis
Obviously, both companies basically demonstrate positive trends in their financial development. At the same time, it is worthy of mention that Exxon-Mobil demonstrates a stable trend to growth that is evident from its basic financial results, including revenues and their growth. It should be said that, at the present moment, the company tends to the enlargement and further growth. In this respect, it is necessary to underline that in 1999 Exxon merged with Mobil and formed the new company that united the potential and power of both companies.

The recent financial results perfectly demonstrate the advantages and benefits the united company has received from this merger. Obviously, this merger played the key role in the strategic development of the company since it really opened new opportunities to the company. To put it more precisely, it position in the market ahs grown stronger, its potential has also increased dramatically. In fact, the current leading position of Exxon-Mobil in the market is to a significant extent determined by the merger and the unification of the two companies which nowadays represent a solid and very successful organization.

Furthermore, it is important to emphasize that Exxon-Mobil tend to increase its presence in new regions where it has never operated before. In this respect, the merger of Exxon and Mobil was quite a natural step in the diversification of the sources of oil and gas and the spread of the company’s presence in new regions rich in these natural resources. It should be said that the company pays a lot of attention to the discovery of new sources of oil and gas and invests substantial sums of money in the new projects (Bender and Cannoy-Bender 1999).

Speaking about Shell, it is necessary to point out that, at the present moment, this is a private company but, in recent years, Shell repeatedly demonstrated an intention to transform into a public company and this is probably the strongest trend that defines the current development and financial results of the company. It is not a secret that the change of the status and the position of the company from private into public could be highly beneficial from purely financial point of view. In other words, the company tends to become public in order to increase its financial benefits since it is supposed that s such a shift will improve the position of the company in the market, increase its effectiveness and productivity and its performance at large and it will also attract the interest of investors to the shares of the company.

The additional investments seem to be quite useful to the company since there is a disturbing trend to the growth of the gap between the total cash and total debt. The latter substantially surpass the former that naturally creates certain tension and makes it possible to speak about potential problems Shell may face in the future. In this respect, the recent decrease of the quarterly revenue growth which constituted -3.3% is another evidence of approaching financial problems of Shell. However, these problems are rather hypothetical than real and, in actuality, the financial position of the company remains quite good.

Exxon-Mobil and Shell: performance and trends
Judging from the financial analysis and current trends in both companies, Exxon-Mobil and Shell, it is possible to estimate that both companies are the leaders of the industry they operate in. To put it more precisely, their leadership in the oil and gas industry is unarguable. At the same time, both companies tend to expansion targeting at the new markets and new regions where they can exploit natural resources, i.e. oil and gas.

In this respect, it is worthy of mention that Exxon-Mobil uses the strategy of mergers to achieve this goal, while Shell still attempts to use its own potential and, at the moment, refuses to form any sort of alliances which could potentially threat to the company’s independence and its current structure and organization. Furthermore, it should be said that, similarly to Exxon-Mobil, Shell also pays also pays a lot of attention to the development of new oil fields and searches for new sources where it could exploit the natural resources. However, it should be said that the current idea of transformation of Shell into a public company may lead to certain slow down in its development and financial performance since it will inevitably lead to some reconstruction and reorganization of the company. In this respect, it should be said that Exxon-Mobil does not have such a disturbing trend and, instead, at the moment, it a stable structure and good organization and there is no serious changes in the plans of the company’s management. However, the merger of Exxon and Mobil in 1999 may be viewed as a change that, in a way, may be viewed as a similar to the idea of Shell to get transformed into a public company, though the latter idea seems to be even more radical than a merger.

Conclusion
Thus, taking into account all above mentioned, it is possible to conclude that, at the present moment, Exxon-Mobil and Shell are in a similar position. Both companies are the leaders of the industry they are operating in, both companies operates worldwide and target at the further expansion in the international markets. On the other hand, the current position of Exxon-Mobil, its financial performance and trends seem to be more preferable compared to Shell which has worse financial results and some disturbing trends. In this respect, it is possible to presuppose that, to a significant extent, such a difference is determined by the expectations of the coming-up changes within Shell, while Exxon-Mobil has already overcome its major structural and organizational changes since 1999. this is why Exxon-=Mobil may be viewed as a more perspective company, at least in short terms.

Research Paper on Hezbollah

Hezbollah after the July War

Introduction
Hezbollah is a Shiit Islamic political and paramilitary organization based in Lebanon. Historically, Hezbollah was a political and military force that targeted at the spread of the Islamist ideology and insisted on the necessity of the creation of an Islamist state in Lebanon. However, its primary goal was rather independence of Lebanon as well as other Muslims states from the impact of Western countries, while Islamism was just the ideological basis that could unite people in their struggle against foreign aggression. No wonder, the idea of the creation of an Islamist state did not become the dominant in Hezbollah’s program but, instead, the opposition and permanent struggle against Israel and other oppressors gradually replaced the idea of the creation of Islamist state in Lebanon, though, it is worthy of mention, that this idea is still relevant though not the mainstream one.

In fact, Hezbollah is quite original organization which provokes numerous discussions concerning its functioning and operations. It should be pointed out that, on the one hand, enemies of Lebanon and Hezbollah view the organization as a terrorist group which expose the neighboring countries, especially Israel to a great threat since its members can organize terror attacks on the territory of Israel that is particularly dangerous in the situation when the struggle against Israel has been proclaimed the official policy of Hezbollah. Moreover, Hezbollah, at least its paramilitary division, operates as a clandestine organization and its military forces do not really have any official status that could be recognized by international community. However, it is worthy of mention that Hezbollah is not a terrorist organization by nature. Instead, it simply uses clandestine methods of struggle since it cannot either technically or financially lead an open struggle against such foreign oppressors as Israel widely supported by the US.

On the other hand, Hezbollah proclaims the struggle against Israel as an organization that is on the guard of Islam ideals. What is more, Hezbollah stands on the ground that its operations are not terrorist but, instead, the organization rather targets at the protection of Lebanese and Muslim population against Israeli aggression. In such a context, it is obvious that Hezbollah is an organization of the national self-defense of Lebanese people.

Such contradictive views on Hezbollah are, to a significant extent, determined by its structure which may be viewed in two dimensions: the first is the official part of the organization that conducts political struggle and another part is clandestine by nature which conducts military operations and intelligent work. Nevertheless, it is important to underline that both parts of the organization function unanimously as a solid mechanism. In fact, it should be pointed out that the tendency to guerrilla methods of operations of Hezbollah are closely linked to the historical development of the organization since it has appeared in the result of the civil war and was one of the military groups that struggled for the independence of Lebanon from outer forces which attempted to establish total control over the country. However, with the end of the war the organization has not disarmed as the threat to the national independence and local population was still quite serious. As a result, nowadays, Hezbollah, headed by Secretary General Subhi Al-Tufayli, Abbas Al-Musawi and Hassan Nasrallah, has a complex structure. First of all, it should be said that Hezbollah has a political unit which has seats in Lebanese legislative organs and coordinates the political goals and methods of the struggle of Hezbollah. On the other hand, there remains a strong military unit which is responsible for military operations of the organization and the defense of the territories where Hezbollah is present that, actually, implies the defense of the entire Lebanon. Among its military unit, it is possible to single out Hezbollah’s rocket force which targets at the protection of its territories from Israeli air attacks and attempts to bomb Israel in response to foreign aggression.

Naturally, the permanent military struggle of Hezbollah resulted in the necessity to develop its own intelligence service which provides the organization with the essential data, including analytical ones about the actions and plans of its enemies, especially Israel that helps lead effective struggle against foreign aggression.

At the same time, Hezbollah also needs to develop a positive image, or at least, it needs to deliver its ideas to ordinary people and international community in order to change the erroneous image of Hezbollah created by Israel and its allies as a terrorist organization. For this purpose, the organization develops its own media including satellite TV and, in recent years, it has started to use Internet widely as a media to promote their own ideas and explain their position to the mass audience.

Furthermore, it is necessary to point out that Hezbollah is not a totally isolated organization. In stark contrast, since it operates internationally, it has to develop its international contacts and for this purpose there exists a unit that deals with foreign relations of Hezbollah that implies relations not only with its supporters, such as Iran or Syria, as well as other Muslim countries which attempt to help Hezbollah financially, but also with Israel, the US and the international community at large that indicates to the fact that Hezbollah looks for peaceful political solution of the existing problems by means of political dialogue with its opponents and leading world powers.

In such a way, at the present moment, Hezbollah has an extremely complicated structure and may be characterized as a politico-militant organization that uses both political and military methods of struggle against foreign aggression, basically from the part of Israel and its allies in the region and that targets at the protection of the local population and real independence of Lebanon.

The relations of Hezbollah with Lebanon
Basically, Hezbollah has long-lasting, historical relations with Lebanon. In actuality, Hezbollah is an organization that is the product of Lebanese civilian war and its major target was the protection of Lebanese independence and the development of the country as a strong and powerful state. It should be pointed out that traditionally, the relations of Hezbollah and Lebanon were quite friendly and supportive. The situation has hardly changed after the July War and Israeli aggression against Lebanon.

At first glance, it would be quite logical to presuppose that after the July War the relations with Hezbollah and Lebanon should deteriorate dramatically because the war was extremely destructive and, what is even more important, Israel started the war on the pretext of the presence of Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon because its policy as well as military operations prevented Israel from establishing its total control in the region, though formally it was the war against a terrorist movement which Hezbollah, as it has already been mentioned above, is not. To put it more precisely, the July War was officially launched under the pretext of the protection of Israel from the terror attacks from the part of Hezbollah which was based in Lebanon. Israeli leaders have taken such a decision after the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah militants. As a result, Israel has launched a military operation which presumably targeted at the defeat of Hezbollah movement.

However, in actuality, the war against Hezbollah gradually transformed into the war against Lebanon and Lebanese people, including civilians. Moreover, it is obvious that it was not Hezbollah itself that was the real target of Israel but it was rather Lebanon that was the major goal of the aggressor. To put it more precisely, Hezbollah actually led and still leads a guerrilla war against foreign oppressors, while Israel simply attempted to establish its control over Lebanon transforming this state into a puppet toy in hands of Israeli leaders without any regard to the interests of the local population, while Hezbollah traditionally protected Lebanese people and struggled for their independence.

In fact, this war was extremely destructive, especially for Lebanese civilians. In such a situation, it is extremely important to underline that even countries supporting Israel, such as the UK, recognized the fact that the July War was absolutely illegal. For instance, the UN’s emergency relief chief, Jan Engeland, described the destructions brought by Israeli air forces as “horrific” and “violation of international humanitarian law with block after block of houses destroyed by Israeli air strikes” (Norton 2007, p.210). It should be said that the results of the conflict was really destructive for Lebanon that could easily undermine the position of Hezbollah in the country since people, being desperate from the aggression of Israel officially targeting at the destruction of Hezbollah, could reject the ideas of this organization and refuse from supporting it. But, in actuality, the public support of Hezbollah only increased and the war convinced people in the righteousness of the position of Hezbollah that was quite natural in the situation when, according to data of the Lebanese government, “more than 15,000 houses, 900 businesses and factories, 630 roads, 77 bridges, 25 fuel stations and 31 utility plants had been destroyed” (Norton 2007, p.243). Moreover, it was even reported that on July 25, an Israeli missile struck on “two clearly marked Red Cross ambulances” (Norton 2007, p. 306).

Regardless such enormous losses and destructions in the result of the July War, the relations with Hezbollah and Lebanon have not deteriorated dramatically. In actuality, Lebanon was rather focused on the opposition to Israel and it was primarily Israel that was severely criticized by Lebanon and not Hezbollah. The latter is quite a logical response to Israeli policy which did not meet, and still does not, any legal norms of international law. In this respect, it is quite natural that Lebanon continues support Hezbollah, which is practically the only real military force that can protect the country than agrees with Israeli policy and military aggression against Lebanon. In fact the policy, strategy and declarations of Israeli leaders in the July War were simply shocking. For instance, according to Haim Ramon, Israeli justice minister, “all those now in south Lebanon are terrorists” (Harik 2006, p.75)

No wonder, after the end of the July War Lebanon still views Hezbollah as the major power that is able to protect the country from the foreign aggression, notably, from the part of Israel. In this respect, it is necessary to underline that the military forces of Lebanon are really weak and in comparison to Israeli forces they are absolutely unable to protect the country effectively from the attack of a serious opponent such as Israel and the July War perfectly proved its weakness of Lebanon. At the same time, despite the fact that Israel launched the war hoping to destroy Hezbollah, this organization has survived and, at the present moment, it is still a serious player in the international relations in the Middle East region. This fact perfectly proves that Israel turned to be unable to fulfill the major goal of the war in Lebanon and, consequently, Hezbollah has won the war in a way due to the fact that it has survived and still preserves its military potential threatening to Israel.

As a result, after the July War, Lebanon naturally makes a choice in favor of Hezbollah as the only real military and political power that is able to protect, or at least, resist to the foreign aggression against the country. The latter is particularly important in the context of the policy of indifference from the part of the major political players in the region, especially the US. Consequently, nowadays, the relations with Hezbollah and Lebanon are probably even stronger that they used to be before the war because Hezbollah is the practically the last but real hope of Lebanon on the effective resistance against any military aggression from the part of a foreign state even though this is such a powerful country as Israel.

The relations of Hezbollah with Syria
Traditionally, Syria was considered to be one of the main allies of Hezbollah and the country that actively supported the organization, especially in its struggle against Israel. It is worthy of mention that Syria amply supported Hezbollah in different ways. In fact, it was financial support, Syria also helped to train Hezbollah guerrillas and, what is more, there were a lot of accusations of Syria in the supply of Hezbollah with weapon and military equipment (Harik 2006, p. 82). These accusations were particularly strong from the part of Israel that insisted on the necessity of the introduction of sanctions against Syria as a state supporting terrorism. In this respect, Israel often appealed to the US as the major fighter against international terrorism. However, this view was totally wrong since Hezbollah cannot be viewed as a terrorist organization. In stark contrast, the help of Syria to Hezbollah should be rather viewed as an international aid of Syria to the movement that struggles for the independence of Lebanon and which may be a reliable ally in the struggle against aggressive policy of Israel and its allies in the region.

At the same time, the July War demonstrated that the declared or presumable support of Hezbollah from the part of Syria is not sufficient or, at least, the scale of Syrian support of Hezbollah is not as large as Israel presumed in its allegations. In fact, Syria did not support Hezbollah as it probably was supposed to do. In fact, it is necessary to underline that the effectiveness of such help was not very significant and did not play the determining role in the July War.

Nevertheless, it does not necessarily mean that after the end of the July War the relations with Hezbollah and Syria have deteriorated dramatically. In stark contrast, Syria, regardless the lack of the open support of Hezbollah in its war against Israel, still remains one of the major allies of Hezbollah in the region. In this respect, it should be said that Syria and Hezbollah are doomed to be allies since both the country and the organization are situated or are operating near Israeli borders and both are in a state of a permanent conflict with Israel since they constantly attempt to restrain its imperialistic policy. Naturally, they need to support each other in order to increase the effectiveness of their struggle against Israeli aggression. It should be pointed out that after the end of the July War the policy of Syria and Hezbollah has hardly changed because it is obvious that neither Syria nor Hezbollah has any real alternatives but the close cooperation and coordination of their actions against their common opponent in the region.

At the same time, Hezbollah’s leaders perfectly understand that Syria could not openly support their organization in the July War since, at the present moment, Syria is constantly facing the threat of the international sanctions or even military aggression from the part of Israel or even the US as a state supporting international terrorism, though in the case of the July War, it is hardly possible to distinguish what party was terrorist, at least judging from the casualties and destruction as well as legitimacy, Hezbollah actions seem to be just a natural attempt to protect itself and Lebanese people living in the area of dislocation of the organization.

In such a situation, Syria should hide its efforts to support Hezbollah and, in actuality, no one can definitively say whether Syria supported Hezbollah in the July War or not and if it did that what the extent of this support was. Nevertheless, it is still possible to estimate that the relations with Hezbollah and Syria still remain stable and quite friendly that may indirectly indicate to the existence of the support of Hezbollah from the part of Syria during the war. This is why it is quite natural that Syria and Hezbollah have preserved good and friendly relations which, actually, could hardly be changed for worse since it would weaken both Syria and Hezbollah in face of their major opponent, Israel.

The relations of Hezbollah with Iran
Among all the allies of Hezbollah, even though few they are, Iran is probably its most reliable and most influential partner in its struggle against Israel. In fact, it is necessary to underline that Iran is considered to be the country that stands behind Hezbollah, i.e. actively supports the organization and contributes to its progress as a militant and political force in Lebanon as well as in the Middle East at large (Harik 2006, p.161). At any rate, it is not a secret that Iran actively assisted Lebanese enthusiasts that created Hezbollah and, what is more, it is basically due to Iran Hezbollah has managed to develop into a powerful movement, which has both political and military wings that coordinate their actions effectively. However, it is necessary to underline that the help of Iran was basically purely technological and financial but the development of Hezbollah was rather a people’s movement and the will of Lebanese people struggling for their independence and better life than a creation of Iran. In other word, Hezbollah is purely national, people ‘product’ and not ‘exported’ from Iran.

At the same time, it is also important to point out the fact that the ideology of Hezbollah is close to the dominant ideology of Iran. In fact, both Hezbollah and Iran have practically the same Islamist ideology. In this respect, it is even possible to estimate that Iran is the closest partner of Hezbollah in the Middle East region since there is no other country that would be so close ideologically to Hezbollah and supported organization so actively. However, Hezbollah is really independent organization and its relations with Iran may be characterized as partnership and friendship of equals. Even though, representatives of Israel often argue that Hezbollah is a ‘creature’ of Iran (Norton 2007) it is obviously a false idea basically resulting from Israel inability to establish its control in the region because of the opposition of Hezbollah. The current situation and the history of the development of Hezbollah perfectly proves the fact that the organization has never been controlled by Iran or any other external power. It should be said that it is just a strategic partnership of Hezbollah and Iran in which both parties are equal.

In such a situation, it seems to be quite strange that Iran similarly to Syria was not as active in its support of Hezbollah as it was supposed to. Nevertheless, numerous critics of the relations with Iran and Hezbollah argue that the aggression of Hezbollah against Israel was the result of the scheming of Iran and not an independent decision of Hezbollah (Norton 2007).

In actuality, it is necessary to point out that Nasrallah repeatedly “dismissed charges by critics that Iran and Syria, both under international pressure, encouraged or even ordered the ambush” (Norton 2007, p.358). Obviously, the arguments of critics are quite unpersuasive and they are not supported by evidences. Nevertheless, the partnership of Hezbollah and Iran was really important and even after the July War the relations with Hezbollah and Iran could hardly change for worse since it is still the major ally of the organization in the international arena. Moreover, at the present moment, Iran is probably the most powerful partner of Hezbollah that is ready to actively support the organization.

As a result, after the July War the relations with Hezbollah and Iran have not changed and, what is more, they simply could not have changed since Hezbollah and Iran are strategic partners and they are equally interested in the preserving friendly relations and close partnership. Such alliance is beneficial for both Iran and Hezbollah since the latter receives significant international support from the part of Iran while the former receives a strong ally in the Middle East which could assist the country to produce some pressure on the major opponent of Iran in the region, Israel that will directly or indirectly influence another, even more powerful opponent of Iran in the international arena, the US.

The relations of Hezbollah with Israel
Speaking about the relations of Hezbollah with Israel, it is necessary to underline that they were always characterized as extremely hostile and both Hezbollah and Israel viewed each other as the most severe enemies. It should be said that Hezbollah always viewed Israel as the greatest threat to Lebanon and the entire Islamist world and its strategic goal was and still is the development of effective ways of the protection against Israeli aggression, to the extent that the organization even targets at the destruction of Israel as a state since the latter threatens to the existence of Lebanese state as well as to many other states of the Arab world.

In such a situation, in order to understand the relations of Hezbollah and Israel after the July War, it is necessary to briefly dwell upon the events that actually led to the war since it will help better realize the nature of the current relations between the opponents.

First of all, it should be said that the war was formally provoked by the activity of Hezbollah. To put it more precisely, the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers was the last straw that made Israel determined to launch the July War targeting at the total extermination of Hezbollah which Israel viewed as a terrorist organization. At this point it is worthy of mention the fact that, even according to UN’s specialists, the similar incidents have occurred periodically throughout the last six years but “none of the incidents resulted in the military escalation. Although the border remained tense and violent, it was generally quiet until July 12” (Norton 2007, p.364).

In such a situation, it is possible to presuppose that the July war was not the war forced by circumstances that made Israel reacting in such an aggressive way, but, instead, it was rather the war of choice, i.e. Israeli leaders have consciously chosen the military operation as the way out from the conflict thought there remained possible peaceful alternatives to solve the conflict.

Consequently, the July War targeted at the total destruction of Hezbollah and the latter perfectly realized this fact. Nevertheless, Israel had failed but the relations of Israel and Hezbollah after this war had deteriorated dramatically. It should be pointed out that Israel, despite its formal victory in the war, is, in actuality, the main loser since, nowadays, the Israeli aggression against Lebanon is viewed by many as non-motivated or even illegal, while the main objective of the war has never been met (Harik 2006, p.195). To put it more precisely, Hezbollah still persists and this organization is still quite powerful and to resist to any foreign aggression even from the part of Israel, though it is necessary to agree that the war undermined its potential considerably and weakened Lebanon in face of the threat of Israeli occupation or control.

For the world community the actions of Israel are quite arguable. Moreover, after the July War, Hezbollah has even higher chances to become a powerful opponent of Israel. At any rate, nowadays, representatives of Hezbollah underlines that Israel remains their enemy number one but, what is more important, many Lebanese people support Hezbollah and share its views on Israel as a hostile and extremely dangerous neighbor that should be rather destructed before it would destruct Lebanon.

In this respect, it should be said that the aggression of Israel resulting in numerous casualties and destructions was the major reason for the undermining any hopes of Israel to find a peaceful solution of their problems with neighboring countries at large, and Lebanon in particular. Obviously, Hezbollah is a significant military and political power in Lebanon and the fact that it resisted to Israel occupation has increased its popularity among ordinary people and even for foreign states Hezbollah may be viewed not as a terrorist organization but as an organization attempting to resist to the foreign occupation (Norton 2007).

Consequently, due to the growing popularity of Hezbollah and hate of Lebanese people in relation to Israel, it would be quite logical to presuppose that the relations of Hezbollah and Israel which are extremely bad after the July War will deteriorate even more as Hezbollah will gradually recover from Israeli attack due to the recruiting of new members and desperation of Lebanese people after the war. This is why it is possible to estimate that Israel and Hezbollah started the war as enemies but they finished the July war as even more severe enemies and Israel may be viewed as a hunter that injured the beast, Hezbollah. In such a situation, it would be quite logical to expect the further deterioration of their relations and the attack in response from the part of Hezbollah. However, it is necessary to underline that it is primarily Israel that is responsible for such deterioration of its relations with Hezbollah and neighboring states.

The relations of Hezbollah with the US
In the situation of the permanent confrontation of Hezbollah with Israel, the US are viewed by many specialists as the possible peacekeeper in the region. In fact, the role of the US may be really crucial in the Middle East, at least in relations of Israel and neighboring states, including Lebanon and, therefore, Hezbollah. It is not a secret that the US is the only superpower in the world and it can influence any country, including Israel. In this respect, it is necessary to underline that Lebanon authorities had expected during the July war that the US would interfere in the conflict and stop Israeli aggression.

However, in actuality, the actions of the US were quite passive and too cautious that could not fail to influence the relations of Hezbollah with the US after the war. Moreover, it should be said that, in stark contrast to the expectations of Lebanese people, “there is no question that this war was seen very, very clearly, in the way that no other war has been seen, really, as a joint Israeli-American war against Lebanon” (Wright 2006). This view on the July war is of a paramount importance to the post-war relations of Hezbollah and the US. In fact, during this war the US has perfectly demonstrated that this country is unwilling to interfere in the conflicts that are not directly related to American interests. Moreover, in views of Lebanese and pro-Hezbollah people such a policy of the US clearly showed the attitude of Americans to the enemies of Israel. In fact, Hezbollah became a sort of catalyst that provoked a clear reaction of the US on anti-Israeli actions in the region. The unwillingness of the US to stop the conflict, or, to put it more precisely, prevent Israeli aggression proved the fact that Hezbollah as well as Lebanon at large should not count for American help in the struggle against Israel.

The latter fact is particularly important because it actually undermines the peacekeeping process in the Middle East at large and in Israel and Hezbollah conflict in particular. The reason is quite obvious, after the July War, Hezbollah definitely associates the US with Israel. Nowadays, these two countries are viewed as close allies who do not really care about human rights, justice, or even legitimacy of war against opponents of Israel.

Naturally, in such a situation, the relations of Hezbollah with the US have also deteriorated considerably since the US did not meet the expectations of Hezbollah and nowadays, this organization, being significantly weakened by the war but not destroyed, perfectly realizes that it should take into consideration the experience of the July War and it should not belief in the willingness of the US to really prevent the military conflict in the region as long as the interests of Israel are concerned. Practically, this means that Hezbollah may view the US as another enemy or ally of Israel and, consequently, the relations of Hezbollah and the US would grow more and more hostile.

As for the US, the country clearly stated its position when the State Secretary, Condoleezza Rice said: “I find it disingenuous that Hezbollah starts a war, and the US is blamed for not stopping it soon enough. Well, maybe Hezbollah should never have started the war in the first place” (Wright 2006, p.64). Obviously, this position seems to be quite convincing until the fact that the July War was the war by choice is not revealed, as it has already been done above. At the same time, the US demonstrates its unwillingness to interfere in the military conflicts if guerilla organizations such as Hezbollah are involved only because they use the only methods of struggle against their opponents that are effective enough and available to them. In such a way, the relations of Hezbollah and the US after the July War may be characterized as deteriorating and lacking mutual understanding.

The relations of Hezbollah and the Middle East
Speaking about the July War and the permanent conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, it is necessary to remember about other countries of the Middle East which also produce a profound impact on Hezbollah and can influence the policy of Israel. It should be pointed out that Hezbollah openly declared that Muslim country is one of the major sources of the financing of the organization (Norton 2007). Muslim countries support Hezbollah largely. Naturally, the July War proved to the Middle East vulnerability of Lebanon and other states to the attacks of Israel. At the same time, the Middle East countries have seen the extent to which Hezbollah could be effective.

Thus, it is possible to estimate that after the July War, the Middle East states that supported Hezbollah realized that, being united, they are able to resist to any foreign power, including that of Israel and the US.

As for Hezbollah, its relations with the countries of the Middle East basically improved after the July War since in the situation when the most powerful states ignore the conflict, the assistance and support of Muslim states was significant not only as some material or financial help but it was even more important as ideological help. As a result, at the present moments, the relations of Hezbollah with the Middle Eastern states improved due to the fact that they became closer to each other and, nowadays, they perfectly realize their ideological, cultural and religious unity in face of the common opponents in the international arena.

The latter is particularly important since the relations of Hezbollah, on the one hand, and Israel and the US, on the other hand, have deteriorated dramatically. This is why the Middle East, being tarnished by the war in Iraq, tends to the unification all its forces, political, economic and military, in the competitive struggle with other states, especially Israel and the US that means that their cooperation with such organizations as Hezbollah will keep growing.

Conclusion
Thus, taking into account all above mentioned, it is possible to conclude that the July War produced a profound impact on Hezbollah and the Middle East region at large. To put it more precisely, despite the fact that the war has undermined the political and military potential of Hezbollah considerably, the war also improved the image of the organization in the Muslim world and countries of the Middle East, except Israel. At the same time, the war has deteriorated the relations of Hezbollah with Israel and undermined the belief of the organization and Lebanese people in objectivity and desire to keep peace in the Middle East from the part of the US. This is why, even though Hezbollah deteriorated its relations with its major opponent Israel and its ally, the US, it also received a larger support not only from its traditional allies Syria and Iran but also from other Muslim countries of the Middle East region.

Research Paper on Business Strategy

Research Paper on Business Strategy

A successful advertising campaign is an extremely important part of the introduction of a new product in the market. At the same time, the advertising and promotion of a new product is not an easy task to do and this is why many companies use the services of agencies in order to increase the effectiveness of their advertising campaigns using the experience of professionals working in a selected agency. The introduction of a new product, such as soft cola drink, is particularly difficult that means that the company introducing this product has to pay a particular attention to the agency it is going to work with.

We can write a custom research paper on Business Strategy for you!

However, at the beginning, it is necessary to briefly dwell upon the company and its product. In fact, the company is specialized on the production of drinks and it is going to launch the production of a new product, a new soft cola drink that should gain its own niche in the market. At the same time, on introducing such a product, it is necessary to take into consideration several factors that can influence its entering the market, advertising campaign and its general success. First of all, it should be said that the current situation in the market of soft cola drink is quite difficult since there are a lot of powerful competitors who has already gained a larger share of the market, such as Coca Cola, for instance.

Consequently, while introducing a new product, it is necessary to take into consideration the possible resistance of the competitors and customers experience. Practically, this means that it is necessary to develop a product which could be different from its major competitors. In this respect, it is possible to recommend creating a new soft cola drink which contains some essential minerals and vitamins that can make the drink useful for customers’ health. This distinguishable characteristic of the new drink can be the backbone of the introduction of the product in the market and may be widely used in the advertising and promotion of the drink.

Naturally, in such a situation, it is necessary to be very careful with the selection of an agency which could successfully plan, organize and conduct the advertising campaign of the new soft cola drink and, what is more, which could clearly deliver the message about the usefulness and originality of the new product to customers. In such a way, it will be possible to successfully introduce the product and gain a large share of the market.

It should be pointed out that corporate culture is of an utmost importance since there should not be any principle differences between the company and the agency employed. In other words, the company and the agency should have similar principles and values. For instance, it is really important that company and the agency were flexible in their organizational structure since the existence of a bureaucratic hierarchy will decrease the effectiveness of work of each organization as well as the effectiveness of their cooperation. At the same, both organizations should realize that they should not put their own interest prior to the interest of their partner. In other words, the company should not expect that the agency will risk its reputation for the sake of the promotion of the new product if it is of a low quality, for instance. On the other hand, the agency should fulfill its function professionally that means that the interest of the company is of a paramount importance and, consequently, the agency should develop unique and effective tools to promote the new soft drink cola the company attempts to introduce.

Naturally, the company may face some difficulties while selecting an agency for its advertising campaign but it is possible to recommend developing a clear strategy which can help find the optimal solution of this problem. To put it more precisely, the company should have a clear set of criteria the agency should meet. In this respect, it is possible to offer the following criteria: 1) the agency should have experience of work in the market, at least for five ore more years; 2) it is preferable that the agency has respectable and creative employees who are known for their work with other companies and products; 3) the agency should have experience in advertising new products in the market; 4) the agency should have technological resources and respectable business partners.

Obviously, the agency should also be able successfully advertise the product using different media. At the same time, it should be said that the agency should develop an effective system of public relations which could create a positive image of the new product. It is possible to involve some celebrities to advertising the new soft drink cola, for instance, in terms of agency’s public relations and promotion of the product. Also, it is also necessary to use traditional means of advertising such as print media, television and Internet. The latter seems to be particularly important at present days since the role of this media in customers’ preferences is constantly growing.

However, in order to effectively assess the effectiveness of the agency’s work, it will be necessary to develop a system of control. It is possible to recommend using some questionnaires and interviews of customers in order to assess the extent to which the new product is popular after the launch of advertising campaign. Also it is possible to organize a kind of lottery when customers could fill in a little questionnaire about the product where there would be a point concerning the source which customers received information about the new product from. In such a way, it will be possible to find out the effectiveness of use of different media by the agency.

Finally, it should be said that the successful introduction of the product and advertising campaign are the result of the successful relationship between the company and the agency. The good relationship is based on the perfect understanding of the goals of the cooperation of the organization and the agency and the realization of the fact that the positive result is equally important to both of them.

"American Gospel: God, The Founding Fathers and the Making of a Nation" Essay

"American Gospel: God, The Founding Fathers and the Making of a Nation" Essay

The US is traditionally characterized as a country with a highly developed democracy where democratic traditions define the life of society, individuals, and all social institutions as well as private organizations. At the same time, the arguments concerning the realization of some democratic principles that are declared by the Founding Fathers of the US democracy and the US state often undermine the belief in the objectivity and sincerity of the Founding Fathers and American Democracy. In this respect, the arguments concerning the separation of church from state are probably the most widely spread. At any rate, this argument is the major problem that Jon Meacham discusses in his book “American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers and the Making of a Nation”. In actuality, the book represents quite an original view on the separation of church from state in the US and the role of the Founding Fathers in this process. Nevertheless, it is necessary to underline that the author simply attempt to represent his view on this problem that makes his book rather thought provoking than scandalous or offensive in relation to the Founding Fathers. In fact, this book is really important as a source of information concerning the development of American democracy in the context of the separation of religion from state affairs and the extent to which this process was difficult. It is really important to analyze the book since the numerous references to the Founding Fathers, their sayings, thoughts, and ideas can help better understand the atmosphere of that epoch and the real attitude of people to democracy at large and the problem of the separation of church and state in particular.

We can write a custom essay on this book for you!

Basically, it should be said that the problem raised by the author is not totally new. In contrast, the problem of the relationship between state and religion or, to put it more precisely, between state and a particular church were always important to the US as well as any other country. It is obvious that since the day of the Declaration of Independence, the US had chosen the democratic way of development but Americans were mainly religious people and, consequently, the religious question was quite significant to them. At the same time, it is necessary to remember that historically church and state always interacted and were closely interlinked. In fact, it is not a secret that state often based its power on the ideology which was religious by nature. In other words, religion often became the ideological basis which united countries and was the major tool that helped state control its people or regulate their behavior by means of moral and ethic norms as well as legal acts which were supported by strong religious beliefs.

On the other hand, Meacham perfectly understands that the US independence brought not only dramatic socio-economic and political changes but it also brought a serious ideological shift from traditional and conservative views based on religious beliefs and ideas to more progressive democratic ideals. In such a situation, the fact that the Founding Fathers of the US as a state and the US democracy attempted to guarantee American citizens possibly larger freedom could not fail to affect the relationship of church and state. As a result, the necessity of the separation of church from state became the burning problem of the US democracy and the Founding Fathers, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and others perfectly realized that this problem should be solved in such a way that the will of American people to demonstrate the superiority of civil freedom and rights over any prejudices, including religious ones, was realized. In such a situation, the development of the concept of religious tolerance was of a paramount importance. In this respect, the separation of church from state should become the backbone of the religious tolerance in the US.

At the same time, it is necessary to remember that the religious tolerance was simply essential to the US at the early stage of the development of the country because American citizens represented not only different ethnic groups that arrived to the New World from different countries but they also represented different religious concessions that was a potential threat to the social stability within the country. It was obvious that the spread of religious conflicts between Americans was a real threat to the unity and national security of the country. Naturally, in such a situation the American state ha no moral nor political right to support any religious movement that existed in the US at that epoch.

Basically, Meacham agrees that the Founding Fathers perfectly realized the real state of things in the US and understood the potential threats hidden in the religious question and the separation of church from state. At the same time, he argues that religion still played an important role in the life of American people who were religious while atheists were really few. Nevertheless, the author underlines that the latter also played a significant role in the life of the country. For instance, he often calls Jefferson, who was one of the Founding Fathers, ‘Jefferson the atheist’. The author argues that the Founding Fathers, namely Jefferson, realized the existing contradictions within American society concerning religious views and the view on the problem of separation of church and state. In this respect, it is possible to remind that Meacham argues that “Jefferson surveyed and staked out an American middle ground between the ferocity of evangelizing Christians on one side and the contempt for religion of secular philosophers on the other. The right would like Jefferson to be a soldier of faith, the left an American Voltaire. He was depending on the moment, both or neither; he was, in other words, a lot like many of us” (4).

In such a way, the author underlines that the Founding Fathers faced a serious dilemma what solution of the problem of relationships of church and state to choose: whether support those who were frantic about religion and demanded state support of a church or, alternatively, stick to the camp of atheist, or ‘philosophers’, who were more skeptical about religion and emphasized the dominance of human rights and freedom as prior to any religious norms and beliefs that implied the necessity to totally separate church from state. In such a situation, according to Meacham, the Founding Fathers find the alternative to both of these possible solutions.

In other words, the Founding Fathers attempted to find a compromise between the religious beliefs of American people and basic principles of democracy and progressive ideas of liberal part of American society. The author states that “belief in God is central to the country’s experience, yet for the broad center, faith is a matter of choice, not coercion, and the legacy of the founding is that the sensible center holds” (5). Consequently, according to Meacham the Founding Fathers held the centrist position avoiding both extremes ranging from state support of church to total denial of church in the US on the official level of state.

At the same time, it is worthy of mention that the author compares the time of the Founding Fathers to the modern epoch. He argues that similarly to the present days, that time was full of “diverse arguments about God and politics” and the Founding Fathers “found the way to honor religion’s place in the life of the nation while people the freedom to believe as they wish” (7). Obviously, this was a compromise but, at the same time, it was a wise decision though it rather indicates to the logic and perfect understanding of the current situation by the Founding Father than to their supernatural intellectual abilities and genius. In fact, the Founding Fathers objectively assessed the existing situation in the US and found the plausible solution which satisfied practically all.

Naturally, it is possible to argue that such a solution of the problem could not fully satisfy each of the opposing camps since neither religious adepts were satisfied as they had not got the state support nor the left philosophers were satisfied as religion still remained an important part of the American lifestyle and American ideology. Nevertheless, it is necessary to underline that such a choice of the Founding Fathers was based on their efforts to lead the country to the stable development with minimal risks of religious conflicts.

At this point it is necessary to underline that Meacham probably exaggerates the role of the Founding Fathers and their intellectual power as he refers to such a decision as a great wisdom while, as it has been just explained above, it was just a logical solution, probably the most plausible among those few that could be found in the existing situation. At the same time, it is necessary to agree with the author that the decision of the Founding Fathers to end official churches marked the start of the practice of toleration which is undoubtedly one of the cornerstones of American democracy. Also, it is necessary to underline that even though it did not fully satisfy all the opposing parties but it was a plausible solution for all Americans regardless their religious and philosophical views.

On the other hand, the author underlines that such a decision created the “wall of separation between church and state” but this wall “is designed to divide church from state, not religion from politics” (75). This is an extremely important remark since it constitutes one of the key ideas of the entire book. In actuality, it means that the author perfectly realizes that religion cannot be fully eliminated from politics. It seems to be obvious that in one way or another religion will inevitably affect the politics. This is the historical trend which could be observed throughout different epochs since willingly or not politicians have to deal with religious questions as they take decisions that affect the life of the entire country. Naturally, such decisions cannot fail to affect religious beliefs of some part of American population.

Furthermore, it should be said that the author attempts to evaluate the decision of the Founding Fathers to separate church from state from different positions. In this respect, it is worthy of mention that the author attempts to carefully analyze the criticism of the separation of church from state and the new policy which were defined by Jefferson as public religion. In fact, the opponents of such a policy argued that the Founding Fathers, on declaring the separation of church form state, actually maintained the religion on the official level. For instance, it is possible to refer to such words as ‘In God We Trust’ that were adopted as a national motto, or the addition of the words ‘under God’ to the Pledge of the Allegiance are “signs of a vital public religion” (102). The author actually rejects allegations that there was an official support of some particular religion by state. For instance, he argues that Jefferson’s references were not to Christ and Meacham underlines that claims that the United States is a “Christian nation” are based on “wishful thinking, not convincing historical argument” (137). To prove his position, Meacham cites Washington’s famous 1790 letter to the Jewish community in Newport, R.I., which said that America “gives… bigotry no sanctions” (159), or else a less well known provision in a 1797 treaty with Muslim Tripoli that declared “the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion” (160). In such a way, the author attempts to prove that the Founding Fathers were really tolerant to religion and state relationship and promoted religious tolerance within the country using the policy of the public religion. In such a way, it seems as if the Founding Fathers attempted to remain religious people and at the same time avoid being offensive in relation to any particular religion, or to put it more precisely, support any religion on the official level.

In this respect, it should be said that the Founding Fathers actually acted in accordance with the interests, views and beliefs of Americans. Obviously, they did not emphasize the fact that they are supporting some religion and they actually did not do it since it would offense the supporters of the total separation of church and state and total elimination of religion from political life of the country. On the other hand, they could never openly demonstrate that they are atheist since it would hurt the religious feelings of adepts of different churches since such a policy of the Founding Fathers would be viewed as an open support of atheism that was totally unacceptable to the substantial part of American population. This is why the Founding Fathers had to use all their diplomatic skills to meet the interests and expectations of all Americans avoiding any sort of extremism in their sayings and actions.

However, it is necessary to underline that the author refers to facts of the different official policy on the state level. To put it more precisely, he argues that some states such as Virginia and Pennsylvania actually supported churches on the state level that actually did not meet the national policy of the federal Government and the Founding Fathers. Naturally, it is hardly possible to argue with the author that such a policy on the sate level could not fail to affect the national policy at large. In such a situation, he views the 1st Amendment as an attempt to prevent such negative impact of state policies on the national policy since, according to this Amendment, the separation of church and state was declared on the Constitutional level.

In this respect, it should be said that it is really possible to view the 1st Amendment in such a context, but, still it is necessary to remember that the question of religion was extremely important to Americans. This is why it would be quite logical to emphasize the separation of church and state on the highest legislative level, i.e. in the US Constitution that naturally defined the policy on the national and state level.

Finally, the author emphasizes that religious tolerance is really important in American society which is viewed as a really democratic society. Eventually, he concludes that “a true Christian ought to be more in making the life of the world more gentle for others than he could be in asserting the dominance of his own faith” (243). In actuality, this was exactly what, according to the author, the Founding Fathers, even though some of them were atheist, attempted to do as they focused their efforts on the development of religious tolerance and putting all religions in equal position in the US. At the same time, it is possible to conclude that the author probably exaggerates the role of the Founding Fathers and their wisdom. In fact, they really made a significant contribution in the development of democracy and religious tolerance but their actions were, to a significant extent determined by the necessity to find a compromise that would satisfy all opposing parties in the US and this is exactly what an attentive reader can learn from the book.

Essay on Inequality and Injustice

Essay on Inequality and Injustice

Political institutions are more than just symbols of the political system existing in the country. Our society and the whole world in general would be a complete dismay and chaos without such institutions. They can be called the spines of societies and not having them would prove to be calamitous. With the appearance of modern theories the opinions of the attraction of anarchy had appeared. Still these opinions can be opposed by a lot of various arguments. That is true that all people have the right to do as they please, still everyone must give up some rights to be governed by some authorities. Being governed and organized by somebody is in the human nature so everything in the existence of the political institutions is natural.

We can write a custom essay on Inequality and Injustice for you!

However, in our modern times of the decrease of the feeling of morals and social duties many political institutions forgot what the purpose of their existence is. In fact this purpose is to protect the citizens from inequality and injustice, and improve their lives. When the first political institutions were originated in Ancient Greece these main principles were followed, however, in our developed world they are slightly sliding into dimness. Thus if these main principles are not followed there is simply no reason for the political institutions to exist.

It is rather surprising and unexpected but even though we live in progressive times, inequality and injustice persist at high levels. Even though the political institutions are still created to secure the “inalienable rights” of citizens against violation, they do not function the way we would expect them to. The inequality nowadays is everywhere, even though more and more “equality laws” are written annually. There is a theory that the economic globalization has made it difficult for governments to do anything about inequality and inequality. This theory can be explained by the fact that “democratic taxes” simply discourage work, driving up the cost of goods produced. They also hold back exports, and provoke capital to “flee abroad in search of higher profits”. (Benjamin I. Page, James R. Simmons, Scott Greer) However, such an explanation is not good enough to explain injustice and inequality under the rule of political institutions today.

And now I would like to give couple of the examples of injustices and inequalities. To begin with, women are still sometimes paid less than men for equal work that is purely cruel, because most working women are supporting a family either with or without a husband. Also there is a horrible new form of injustice among judges and legislators. The attorneys, judges and even public prosecutor are unjust and corrupt. A good example is the case of a Zachira Sheikh who was threatened by the judge in order to testify the wrong facts. Today also the courts are closed to complaints, and citizens simply lost the right to appeal to the government. In addition the political institutions still interfere with the citizens’ lives even though they are not supposed to unless he violates the rights of a fellow citizen. (Owk)

In conclusion, I would like to say that the creation of political institutions was necessary for everybody’s well being and safety. They do a lot of great things for us, like providing us with a particular structure and a sense of security. However, the political institutions today are not as effective as they should be when dealing with injustice. So only if this situation is improved and the government is returned to its proper function, the blessing of liberty, justice and equality my come to our society.

Compare and Contrast Research Paper

Compare and Contrast the Arabian Gulf under Ottomans and the British

Introduction
Historically, the Arabian Gulf was in the epicenter of geopolitical struggle of different nations and empires. Paradoxically, being situated in a very profitable region, the states of the Arabian Gulf could hardly fully benefit from their geographical advantages since they had to constantly struggle with some external power that attempted to establish its own control in the region. In this respect, the last few hundred years are particularly noteworthy since within this period of time the states of the Arabian Gulf were mainly under the control of some other power that defined the development of the region, its socio-economic, political and even religious development. In this respect, it is necessary to underline that the impact of the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire had been extremely significant in the region within last few centuries. It is necessary to underline that the Ottoman Empire was one of the major world powers of the epoch when it invaded the Arabian Gulf and, naturally, it managed to totally subordinate practically all spheres of life of the states of the Arabian Gulf to its will. As for the British Empire, it was probably not so ambitious in the region since it was more concerned on the economic dominance in the region and its impact turned to be significantly weaker in socio-cultural and political domains than that of the Ottoman Empire, though its economic presence may be still observed in the region.

We can write a custom Compare and Contrast Research Paper for you!

Ottomans and the British entering the Arabian Gulf Traditionally, the Arabian Gulf was the subject of the primary concern of the most powerful states that dominated in the region or even in the entire world. In this respect, the fact that Ottomans and the British eventually entered the Arabian Gulf does not seem to be illogical. In fact, it was rather a question of time for both empires to enter the region.

Speaking about the Ottoman and British Empires entering the Arabian Gulf, it is necessary to point out that both empires were extremely powerful at the moment. However, it is worthy of mention that the Ottoman Empire was on the peak of its power and the entering of the region was a part of the expansion of the empire. Remarkably, the entering of the Arabian Gulf marked the approaching apogee of the power of the Ottoman Empire after which the gradual decline of the empire had started.

As for the British Empire, it entered the region when its political, economic and military power was quite significant but still, it was not the Golden Age of the British Empire yet as it was in the case of the Ottoman Empire. This is probably why they entered the region in a different way compared to the Ottoman Empire. To put it more precisely, the Ottoman Empire entered the region by means of military aggression and the following occupation of the country. In this respect, it is necessary to underline that one of the strategic episodes in the Ottoman expansion in the region was 1535, when the empire took Baghdad from the Persians and gained control over Mesopotamia. Moreover, the defeat of the Persians also opened the naval access to the Persian Gulf to the Ottoman Empire. Gradually, Ottomans managed to establish its control over the region. In such a way, the Ottoman entering the region was accompanied by military invasion of the local states which became a part of the Ottoman Empire.

In contrast, the British entering the region was quite different that may be explained by different reasons. For instance, it was more problematic for British empire to send a large army to the region because it was geographically remote from the British Empire and, what is more, the British demonstrated their profound economic interests to the region. Initially, in 1763, the British Empire established its residence at Bushir in Persia by the British East India Company. Later, throughout the 19th century, the British Empire spread its influence on other countries of the region, including the United Arab Emirates, called ‘Trucial Coast States’ and Bahrain. It should be pointed out that British did not use military expansion as a major tool of their entering the region, though their power was quite significant and the local states could not actually resist to the British influence and gradually the British along with other Europeans replaced Ottomans in the region in the 19th century.

In such a way both empires entered the region and established their control but the Ottoman Empire basically relied on military power and attempted to unite the region politically, economically and ideologically, while the British empire primarily relied on its power to truce the region and develop economic relations. Reasons Ottomans and the British entered the Arabian Gulf Obviously, both the Ottoman and the British Empires considered the entering the Arabian Gulf its strategic goal and, basically, this goal was motivated by the imperial ambitions of both states. It is necessary to underline that both empires viewed the region as a strategically important area. In order to fully understand the reasons of the Ottoman and the British Empires to enter the Arabian Gulf, it is necessary to simply evaluate its significance for the region and entire world.

In this respect, it should be said that the Arabian Gulf always played an important role in economic, political and military development and balance in the world. First of all, it should be said that the Arabian Gulf played an important economic role in the international relations. In fact, the Arabian Gulf linked the West and the East. Consequently, the control over the region was not only strategically important but also extremely profitable to both empires. At this point, it is possible to remind that by the mid-16th century the economic position of the Ottoman Empire had started to deteriorate since Europeans had discovered the New World and the development of European fleet opened new opportunities for trade. In such a situation, the invasion of the Arabian Gulf could substantially increase benefits of the Ottoman Empire from international trade since important naval and land trade routes were situated there.

As for the British Empire, the region was also economically important since it practically linked its richest colonies in the East with Great Britain. Naturally, in such a situation, it was extremely important to the British Empire to control the Arabian Gulf since the transition of goods from and to India and other Eastern colonies could be easier, cheaper and faster than the transition around the African continent. In this respect, it is worthy of mention the building of the Suez Channel which facilitated the transportation and trade between Europe and Eastern states. In such a way, the British dominance in the region provided the empire with ample opportunities to control and benefit from the trade between Europe and the East. The same benefits the Ottoman Empire could enjoy as well.

On the other hand, it is worthy of mention that, for the Ottoman Empire, the Arabian Gulf was also important from military and political point of view since the empire needed stable states on its borders and, what is more, it needed to control the Arabian Gulf to feel secured from external expansion on the Eastern borders. In such a way, the Ottoman Empire simply secured its Easter borders and attempted to create stability in the region, which was traditionally characterized by numerous conflicts, and, consequently, the empire could benefit from such stability, growing trade, and progressing economy.

Changes Ottomans and the British made and the impact both powers made on the Arabian Gulf Naturally, the impact of the Ottoman and the British Empires could not remain unnoticed by the local states. At the same time, it is necessary to underline that it is quite difficult to objectively compare the changes both empires brought to the region. It should be said that the Ottoman Empire totally invaded the states of the Arabian Gulf but its political power in the region was rather formal than real since the local states sustained certain degree of sovereignty. On the other hand, the Ottoman Empire had a profound socio-cultural impact on the region since it enforced the position of Islam in the region making it practically the only dominant religion. Moreover, this religion and dominating ideology affected practically all spheres of life of the local population, regulating social life, establishing new traditions and customs, and even the private life of individuals.

However, the changes introduced by the Ottoman Empire could hardly be named radical since the Arabian Gulf states were culturally close to the empire. For instance, Islam traditionally played an important role in the region. On the other hand, the dominance of the Ottoman Empire brought peace to the region which was quite rare in the situation when different states competed for the leadership in the region.

As for the British Empire, it should be said that the changes introduced by the British basically related to economic sphere and economic relations. At the same time, similarly to the Ottoman Empire, the British attempted to trace the region and they attempted to maintain peace in the Arabian Gulf but, they did not really change the situation since their peacekeeping efforts were less successful compared to those of the Ottoman Empire probably because of the lack of military aggression which accompanied the Ottoman invasion of the region.

Furthermore, it should be said that the British Empire attempted to make the Arabian Gulf a kind of the transition point where different cultures of the West and East mixed up in the result of the growing economic activity. At the same time, the British Empire started to exploit the natural resources of the region and actually defined the economic profile of the region for decades to go even after the British formal retreat from the Arabian Gulf. For instance, to a significant extent, it is due to the British dominance in the region British companies, such as Shell, played the defining role in the development of the local gas and oil industry, which is the main industry till the present days.

In such a situation, it is quite difficult to define which of the empires produced a larger impact on the region. on the one hand, there was the Ottoman Empire which occupied the Arabian Gulf region and defined its future socio-cultural and political development. Its impact can be felt even at the present moment since the states of the Arabian Gulf maintain traditional despotic regimes typical for the Ottoman Empire. However, the impact of the Ottoman Empire was not so radical and sensitive to the local population because Ottomans were closer to the local population as they had similar culture, ethic and moral views, religious beliefs.

In stark contrast the British Empire was totally hostile in the cultural and religious aspect to the local population. British values were often unacceptable to the local population. Moreover, the British Empire exploited the region economically and its impact remains quite strong to the extent that it is even possible to estimate that it is the British impact that defined the current economic development of the region. However, it is worthy of mention that the British control in the region was not so total, at least there were other European competitors who attempted to influence the region.

At any rate, nowadays, it is obvious that the impact of the British Empire defines the present economy of the states of the Arabian Gulf, while the cultural and political impact of the Ottoman Empire was probably not so significant as economic impact of the British because the local states were close to the Ottoman cultural and political traditions.

Conclusion Thus, it is possible to conclude that the impact of both the Ottoman and British Empire was extremely significant on the Arabian Gulf. Even though the Ottoman invasion was accompanied by active military operations, Ottomans still was not totally hostile to the local population since their ideology and culture were close to people inhabiting the region. On the other hand, the British entered the region more peacefully, though they targeted practically at the same economic benefits that Ottomans did. However, the British impact was more sensitive to the local population since it brought new economic relations, a totally different ideology, political and cultural views which affected the Arabian Gulf dramatically.

Term Paper on Endangered Species

Endangered Species – Cuban Solenodon

Recent era of high technologies and developing industries led our society to the new stage of evolution. However, besides obvious advantages for civilization, the twentieth century brought certain problems in life of our planet. Nature began suffering soundly from products of human civilization. There is a great number of factors that influence decrease of population of various species (McGavin 13). One of the endangered species is Cuban Solenodon, very rare animal.

There exist only two species of Solenodons - Solenodon cubanus and Solenodon paradoxous. Cuban Solenodon (scientific name - Solenodon cubanus) belongs to the family of Solenodontidae, Soricomorpha order, Mammalia class of Chordata phylum. This rare spieces (see Attachment 1) was uncovered by Wilhalm Peters in 1861. These small (around 50 cm long) shrew-like animals live mostly in Cuban Oriente Province. Since its discovery, Cuban Solenodon was mainly found in this area, being Cuban endemic (see Attachment 2).

Historical investigation has showed that species of Solenodon, the ancestors of modern Cuban Solenodon, were rather distributed animals around thirty million years ago (MacDonald 49). They lived in the area of moders North America. However, the size of population was not estimated. Therefore, the spieces is not young, having long history of development. Unfortunately current population size of this animal is very small. There were found only several decades of animals in the end of nineteenth century. In the period from 1890 to 1970 (Massicot) no animals were cought. After that, few specimen were caught in 1970-es and in 1999. Total number of representatives of Cuban Solenodon found since its discovery equaled 36 animals. However, only several years ago, in 2003, 37-th specimen was caught. Still there are no accurate data on current population of this animal.

Solenodons live in a wild nature and are protected by law. Hence, solenodons are not kept in Zoo parks as the animal is difficult to keep in captivity and is considered a threatened species. Although Cuban Solenodon is classified as endangered species, many biologists think that the small population size of this animal is conditionad by its lifestyle. Indeed, Solenodon cubanus is a nocturanl animal, mostly being active at night while sleeping at daytime (Answers.com). Besides, solenodons live in burrows. These facts are considered by some scientists to be reasons for rarity of this animal, as it is rather difficult to find solenodon in wild nature. Moreover, reproduction of Cuban Solenodon is very low. These animals produce maximum one litter per six months, having mostly one offspring (sometimes two) per litter. Therefore, there exist natural factors conditioning small population and rarity of Cuban Solenodon. However, there are many other facts that affected the small population size of this species.

There is very little known about natural events that caused small population of Solenodon Cubanus. Still, some factors and processes in twentieth century indeed affected its distribution. One of the reasons is considered the slash of tropical forest for agricultural needs. As long as solenodons live in wet forests, it was very dangerous for their population. Besides, the introduction of some animals (mongoose, dogs, and cats) caused decline of Cuban Solenodon population (Theusch). Being historically very unfamiliar with predators, solenodons can not fight with these animals and defend themselves. Therefore, the decrease of population size of Solenodon Cubanus depends totally on various kinds of human activity.

Cuban Solenodon was for the first time classified endangered species in 1970. Current status of this animal is also endangered, being in the Red List of Threatened Species. This species is protected by law and federal regulations of many countries, including the United States of America and Cuba. Unfortunately, the status of this rare animal and its protection does not make its population grow. On my view, very little can be done now for saving this species from going extinct besides decreasing our activity on deforestation. I believe that people will recognize the volume of enormous harm they cause to the wild nature. And I sincerely hope that once we can see this little animal in a wild forest of Eastern Cuba with our own eyes.
